Why you should have a protein shake after a workout

May 2019

Protein is very important for the body. You need it in order to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. It is also used by your body to build and repair tissue. This is why taking a protein shake after working out is a great way to aid your recovery.

When you exercise, contractions of the muscles cause tiny micro-tears in the muscle fibres. Straight after a workout is the best time to get protein into the body, as the protein can be delivered to the muscles to help them begin to repair these tears. Protein in shake form is the easiest way to get protein into your body straight after a workout. They are quick and easy to prepare, perfect if you’re short on time and don’t want to meal prep for after your workout. They are also portable so you can take it with you to the gym and take it straight after your workout. Protein shakes take around 30 minutes to reach the muscle after taking them, so your muscles will already be benefiting even before you reach home or work!

Protein is vital for the repair and recovery of the muscles. Try to aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight as a minimum. The more protein you take in, the quicker your muscles will repair.

Of course, there are a few other bonuses to taking protein - protein is important for every part of the body, so it will help with your overall health, boost your energy levels, and support your muscles and bones. Your hair and nails will be super shiny and healthy, as these are mostly made up of protein. It also helps support the absorption of important nutrients.
