Can I consume too much protein?
Protein is an important part of your diet. It is an important element for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. It is used to build and repair tissue, and also to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals. Your hair and nails are also mostly made up of protein.
There are lots of benefits to a high protein diet, for example increased satiety, higher muscle retention and quicker muscle repair. Side effects from high protein intake are very rare in healthy individuals, however, you should be aware of the downsides to consuming a high amount of protein.
Consuming high amounts of protein can lead to side effects such as:
- Kidney Damage
- Calcium Loss
- Bad Breath
Unless you have any kidney or liver problems, you would need to eat a very, very large amount of protein for a long time to cause serious damage, so you shouldn’t worry too much. However, if you do have kidney problems, you should exercise more caution with your protein intake.
